This project was designed to create an Excel time record for automatically calculating Overtime and Double Time according to California labor law.
Our client had a division of its business in California. Employers in California must pay Overtime (time & one half) (A) for hours worked from 8 to 12 hours in a single day, (B) after 40 hours in a workweek, and (C) for the first 8 hours on the 7th consecutive day of work. The company must also pay Double Time (A) for more than 12 hours of work in a single day and (B) after 8 hours of work on the 7th consecutive day in a workweek. The California employees of this company were often working 7 days per week including on-call schedules, which made the calculation of payroll a nightmare.
This spreadsheet eliminated the entire problem and accurately computed Overtime and Double Time using the 5 variables above.
